Xavier Cortada, “Seahorse | Seagrass,” 60″ x 36″, acrylic on canvas, 2014
Littoral Creatures,” an art exhibit by Xavier Cortada at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center, opened on September 13th, 2014 and coincided with the artist’s 50th birthday. The exhibit ran thru November 1st. Learn about other events and showings at www.cortada.com/LittoralCreatures/Opening
Littoral Creatures” is Miami Environmental Artist Xavier Cortada’s effort to draw attention to the ongoing threats to South Florida’s seagrasses. Cortada’s “Littoral Creatures” draws attention to the creatures that make the seagrass and surrounding waters their home.
Cortada focused his creative efforts on the many creatures that depend on seagrass for their survival. By highlighting some of the many sea creatures we humans love, Cortada hopes people will come to understand the importance of protecting the underwater plants that provide their shelter and food; plants rarely noticed by us – the seagrass.
Littoral Creatures
September 13 – November 1, 2014
“Littoral Creatures” is an art exhibit by Xavier Cortada at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center, Crandon Park/North Beach Entrance, Key Biscayne, FL. It is free and open to the public. Proceeds (30%) from sales of the art will benefit the under-served children’s programming at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center.
At the opening reception of the Littoral Creatures exhibit Cortada also unveiled the poster of the “Seahorse|Seagrass” painting he created to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserves. Exhibit-goers received a copy of the poster along with information on how to join Cortada in celebrating forty years of protecting the preserves. They were inducted into the “seahorse society” and encouraged to engage in eco-actions to protect the bay and its seagrasses for the next 40 years.
The exhibit’s opening reception was on Saturday, September 13th, 2014 from 5pm – 7pm and coincided with the artist’s 50th Birthday.
Paddle Out
Cortada invited attendees to join him again on January 10, 2015 for an adventure paddle culminating in a participatory eco-art installation on Helker’s Island in the aquatic preserves.
Closing Reception and Wake
On the three month anniversary of Pancho’s death, Miami artist Xavier Cortada invites you to join him at Biscayne Nature Center to a “celebration of life” for the threatened animal. Pancho, the American crocodile “who” died on August 29th, 2014 after being trapped at his home (Gables by the Sea) and buried in an undisclosed location will finally receive a proper public burial. The evening will include the unveiling of Pancho’s portrait, a eulogy, offerings made by participants (including suggestions on how best to coexist with nature) and a proper burial.
Pacho is survived by a host of littoral creatures that struggle to survive on Biscayne Bay.
In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the ecology of the bay.
