In 2006, Cortada pioneered eco-art in Miami-Dade County by creating the “Reclamation Project,” an initiative that has since generated over 25 acres of coastal wetland reforestation. Other eco-art projects that have worked with scientists and practitioners to engage the community in bioremediation include “Native Flags,” a native tree planting project that has seen every public school in the county plant a native tree and flag on school grounds, and “FLOR500,” a nature, art and history project that grew 500 wildflower gardens across Florida to celebrate the state’s quincentennial.
