ART INSTALLATIONS AT EVERY MIAMI-DADE PARK WILL CALL ATTENTION TO CLIMATE CHANGE

WPLG CHANNEL 10: Miami-Dade Artist-in-Residence Xavier Cortada sounds the alarm on the threat of sea level rise with his new work: “The Underwater” creates elevation-driven public art installations that reveal the vulnerability of coastal communities to rising seas, spark climate conversations, and catalyze civic engagement.

“Antarctica doesn’t care if you believe sea level rise is happening or not,” said Cortada, “It’s still coming. It’s not an ideological issue.”

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) released its Forging Climate Solutions: How to Accelerate Action Across America report in Washington, DC on October 24th, 2023. In its inside cover it featured Xavier Cortada’s climate art, “The Underwater HOA: Elevation Drive (9 feet).”

The diverse commission, comprising leaders from arts, faith communities, environmental justice, youth activism, natural and social sciences, Indigenous knowledge, public health, and urban design, underscores the need to bridge ideological gaps to address the critical issue of climate change collectively.

CELEBRATING ART IN MEDICINE AT UM MAILMAN CENTER

In this discussion, Xavier Cortada, Artist and Professor of Practice at the Miller School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics, and Dr. Daniel Armstrong, Director of the University of Miami Mailman Center for Child Development, reflect on their extensive collaboration in arts and medicine, which began in the late 1990s.

A video showcasing their partnership was screened on October 1, 2023, as part of the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Mailman Center for Child Development. The video highlights four collaborative murals created by Cortada with pediatric patients over two decades ago, providing a glimpse into the unique intersection of art and medicine.
