“The Underwater” garners national attention

THESE YARD SIGNS OFFER AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH ABOUT SEA LEVEL RISE

“Last week — to coincide with the COP28 climate conference in Dubai and Art Basel, the festival that attracts thousands of wealthy tourists to Miami each winter — Cortada recruited hundreds of Miami students, homeowners and shopkeepers to display their elevations in their front yards and store windows to spark conversations about potential flood damage and skyrocketing insurance rates.”

CORTADA NAMED #100LATINOS2023

Xavier Cortada was selected as one of the 100 Latinos Most Committed to Climate Action by Sachamama and EFE, alongside Pope FrancisEva Longoria, and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

This 100 most influential Latinos’ list, carried out with the support of different organizations, highlights individuals for their commitment in areas such as climate activism, communications, environmental rights, sustainable policies, science, and corporate impact.

FRONT PAGE: ARTIST AIMS TO OPEN EYES ABOUT RISKS OF SEA RISE WITH MIAMI ART WEEK INSTALLATION

"His latest installation for Miami Art Week won’t be found in a gallery or exhibit space. Instead, you might spot it while strolling downtown, in Wynwood, on Lincoln Road, on the sands of Miami Beach or maybe visiting a business.

“I wanted to create a community-wide participatory art installation to understand we are all in this together, and instead of kicking the can down the road to the future we can work to adapt now to the future of rising seas,” Cortada said."

UNITED NATIONS CLIMATE CONFERENCE (COP28) SHOWCASES CORTADA AS "ACTIONIST"

Actionism: vigorous action to bring about change.

Xavier Cortada believes that art can be the force for change that our planet needs. His vision is not only about raising awareness through art, but by empowering people to design a better future for all. “That sculpture in the park is a question mark that now you’re compelled to answer,” he says.

Around the world, people are rising to the challenge that climate change presents. These actionists are crucial to keeping 1.5°C within reach.

CORTADA SHARES 'ART X CLIMATE' INSIGHTS AT THE EXPLORATORIUM

“Miami-based artist Xavier Cortada, who has won national attention with his Underwater HOA project, described how he got Miami residents to look up their property’s elevation and make yard signs announcing their properties’ elevation.”
