ON THIS DAY

Florida’s twelve state universities are planning to reopen campuses in the fall which will be presented to the state university system’s Board of Governors on June 23. These plans include protocols for encouraging social distancing on campus housing and even delaying the start of classes to allow time for details to be tested and refined.

Florida State University, for example, will not assign triple or quadruple dorm rooms or provide ice machines and microwaves in common kitchens. At University of Florida, there will be an online screening test, but at the same time, David Nelson, UF’s senior vice president for health affairs, noted that the University will not test every student, mainly offering to those explicitly concerned about possible exposure to the virus. They will also be sampling wastewater coming out of each dorm room in an effort to be more targeted about their testing.
