Twenty-five of our neighbors have been pronounced dead in the last 24 hours. As of May 6th, 2020, there have been a total of 432 deaths due to coronavirus across Miami-Dade County. May those who have fallen to the pandemic rest in peace.
City of Miami Commissioner Ken Russel and Coconut Grove art therapist Morgan DeFranco created the Hearts Passion Project, a website to connect kids with seniors and share their artwork during isolation. So far, the four-day-old website has over 500 seniors across 12 facilities with students from 15 schools invited to participate and that number growing.
“The mental health consequences of isolation can be dire,” DeFranco said. “You’re used to looking forward to seeing friends and family and suddenly that face-to-face interaction is gone. Art helps heal depression and anxiety. If a kid made me a picture, even if I didn’t know exactly what it was, it would warm my heart.”
