UF Students and the Community Invited to Participate in Ritualistic

Installation and Dedication of New Moving Water Artwork at UF July 30

WHO: Miami artist Xavier Cortadathis year’s University of Florida (UF) Creative B public artist, more than 100 UF engineering and art students as well as members of the community will participate in a ritualistic installation and dedication of Moving Water, a new permanent piece of art at UF that marks the Panama Canal Centennial by connecting it with the lives of present-day Floridians.

WHAT: The Moving Water project was conducted with UF engineering and art students and brings awareness of our impact on the environment by examining how much Florida has been transformed in the last 100 years. Students and members of the community are invited to participate in a ritualistic installation and dedication of Cortada’s 32-foot-long ceramic tile mural made by fire kiln that depicts “scarred water,” water as it flows in spaces carved for it across Panama and Florida (with its Panama Canal equivalents).

Attendees are invited to BYOW (bring your own water) and participate in a procession throughout campus. Water should be collected from the area in a non-glass vessel and include a label with the following information: individual’s name, source of water, date of collection, description of the site and brief explanation of one’s connection to the site or planned connection. Participants will carry the water and march in a procession to music from the carillon composed by UF School of Music student Mitchell Stecker. Once at the Computer Science & Engineering Building, participants will place their water near the new ceramic tile mural and a dedication will occur.

WHEN: Wednesday, July 30, 2014, 2 p.m.

WHERE: The procession begins at Library West and ends at the Computer Science & Engineering Building.
