ON THIS DAY

Back in April, Governor Ron DeSantis issued a statewide moratorium on evictions and foreclosures for 45 days, extending it on May 14 for another 18 days. The moratorium was set to end June 2 at 12:01 a.m. and, in a last minute decision, DeSantis extended it for another 30 days, through July 1.

Public records show that more than 700 residential and commercial evictions have been filed in Miami-Dade since March 12, just sitting in a legal queue that will open as soon as the ban ends. Advocates continue to push for these suspensions with Mayor Gimenez and the Miami-Dade Police Department as the volume of coronavirus cases increase and unemployment assistance remains pending for thousands of Floridians.
