APRIL 5, 2020

Fifty four have now died in our county. May they rest in peace. The numbers took a grave turn for Miami-Dade, when a Sunday report from the Emergency Operations Center reported 54 deaths up nearly 75% from Saturday’s count of 31 COVID-19 deaths to date.

Total number of cases (Miami-Dade County): 4061

Total number of deaths: 31

ON THIS DAY

Wilson Maa is one of 31 neighbors to die due to coronavirus complications in Miami-Dade. He passed away last night at Larkin Community Hospital in Hialeah after waiting nearly 5 hours aboard the Coral Princess for medical care. When his oxygen level dropped, ship medical staff put him on a manual ventilator, telling his family there were no hospital beds available and ambulances were on lockdown despite private ambulance companies that were ready to transport the sick earlier this week and 150 adult ICU beds available at hospitals throughout the county. It wasn’t until his family called 911 when Maa finally received the care he needed, but by then it was too late. He was 71 years old.

In a statement, his family wrote: “We are so lucky to have a father that was so silly, fun, engineering minded and thoughtful. There are no words for the sorrow we have experienced but only joy for the memories we had with him.”
