ON THIS DAY

The death care sector is facing new challenges sprung on by coronavirus. More deaths, longer work hours, and new restrictions on mourners’ ability to say goodbye to their loved ones has drastically impacted the way funeral homes operate. Jorge Rivero, the co-owner of Vior Funeral Home in Miami, said he’s taken on double or triple the number of families compared to an average week.

For him and many others, this means a higher degree of exposure to the disease which increases as Miami-Dade’s death toll continues to grow as well as a strain on resources and the capacity of funeral homes to keep pace. More so, creating an intimate and comfortable feeling for families who’ve just lost their loved ones is no longer possible with social distancing and mandates to keep viewings to 10 people maximum. Also, those who lose loved ones for reasons outside of coronavirus find themselves being unable to mourn.

“Now they just want to get out. They don’t know if we have the virus, we don’t know if they have it. They just pick up the remains and go. It’s very fast, and very weird,” Rivero says.
