Greetings neighbors, this is the Miami Corona Project Daily Update for Friday, April 10th, 2020:

As of yesterday, April 9th, 2020, there have been 5,898 positive cases of coronavirus across the county, with 446 hospitalizations and 66 deaths.

Unfortunately, it appears the spread and impact of coronavirus is still getting worse, with 16 new deaths reported within Miami-Dade County since the last update.  May they rest in peace.

In response to the increased overcrowding of the city’s homeless shelters, Miami-Dade County has rented out 300 hotel rooms with more expected to follow. This effort hopes to mitigate the issues that homeless residents may be experiencing at this time, while also providing a place for essential healthcare workers to rest between shifts.

Across our nation 30,161 new cases of the virus have been reported, bringing the national total to 465,088 positive cases along with 16,510 deaths. At this time, the final projected toll of national deaths due to coronavirus has lowered to 60,000, a great deal lower than the 100,00-200,000 deaths reported by earlier models.

Let’s hope today brings better news.  I’ll update you tomorrow.

ON THIS DAY

Miami-Dade’s first inmate has tested positive for coronavirus, confirmed by a corrections spokesman this morning. The inmate was being treated at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center’s medical ward since March 30, other inmates and staff were quarantined immediately, and the inmate’s housing unit is being thoroughly cleaned.

Fears of coronavirus spreads in Miami-Dade’s crowded jails continue to grow amongst inmates and authorities alike. As of today, 22 corrections officers and employees have contracted COVID-19, but only two inmates from the center have been tested. These two tests returned negative, but one inmate suggested to the Miami Herald his fears of the virus going to “spread like wildfire” within the cramped quarters of the detention center before more inmates are able to get tested. Upon sharing his fears, he noted that he had a sore throat this morning.
