Mayor Oliver G. Gilbert III, mayor of the City of Miami Gardens, sits with artist Xavier Cortada to discuss our government’s vulnerabilities in the time of coronavirus across local, state, and national levels. He shares how the City of Miami Gardens, which maintains a majority Black population, has kept its residents engaged and informed during these times with initiatives like healthy, virtual cooking classes and free masks provided by police officers in mask mandate violations.

About Mayor Oliver Gilbert

Mayor Oliver Gilbert is a graduate of Florida A&M University and the University of Miami School of Law. His career in public service began as the Legislative Aide for a state representative, then continued on to become Deputy of Policy for a Florida State Gubernatorial Candidate and Assistant State Attorney in the Broward County State Attorney’s office. He returned to his hometown after it was incorporated as the City of Miami Gardens in 2003, was appointed to the Miami Gardens City Council in 2008, and was elected as the second mayor of Miami Gardens in 2012. He is currently serving his second term.
