ON THIS DAY

Yet another holiday passes this year during the coronavirus pandemic. This Mother’s Day, the Miami Herald recognizes and shares the stories of mothers who are on the frontlines.

They cover the experiences of five women; University of Miami Hospital ICU doctor Dr. Lesly Farquharson who works with the “sickest of sick”; breast surgical oncologist Starr Mautner, M.D., at the Miami Cancer Institute who takes virtual but can no longer feel for tumors in her patients; Miami firefighter Melissa Winchester who has been on the force for nearly 20 years; North Miami police officer Natalie Buissereth, who mothers 50 children in the department’s Police Athletic League (PAL) program; preschool teacher Jessica Steszewski a third generation of teachers in her family who also gave birth during a pandemic; and first grade schoolteacher Maria Paola Attento who struggles with knowing just how much to discuss about coronavirus to her students.
