ARTIST'S STATEMENT

I am a socially-engaged, environmental artist and a UM Professor of Practice. For three decades, I’ve developed and implemented socially-engaged art processes to strengthen our connection to the natural world and to each other. I do this through object-making and through a practice that has a myriad of conceptual, performative and participatory layers.

Much of my art is structured around creating experiential activities that pique curiosity, instill a sense of responsibility and encourage more exploration in order to build  cadre of engaged, compassionate and science-literate citizens.

Now more than ever, as our social and racial inequities are further exposed, a pandemic rages, and our climate emergency worsens, we need art to show us the way.  Art gives all a sense of ownership, connectedness and belonging. Through my work I want to showcase arts elasticity across disciplines to effectuate real, meaningful and lasting change in an imperiled, polarized and imperfect world.
