On this episode of the Miami Corona Project, Miami-Dade County Commissioner and mayoral candidate, Esteban Bovo, sat with artist Xavier Cortada to discuss the impact coronavirus has had on his constituents in District 13. Focusing on Hialeah residents, Bovo discusses how at risk community members – blue collar workers, the elderly, and those in densely populated environments – have been dealing with the pandemic and the steps local government has taken to assuage the impacts. He recognizes the politicization of the virus and shares what he envisions Miami’s recovery to be, all while tying in the intersections of education, economy, transportation, and climate change.

About Esteban L. Bovo

Commissioner Esteban L. Bovo represents Miami-Dade County Commission District 13, which encompasses Hialeah, Miami Lakes, and Palm Springs North. He is in the running for Miami-Dade’s mayoral seat after 22 years of public service beginning in 1998 when he was appointed as councilman for the City of Hialeah.

In 2008 and 2010, he served as a state representative, advocating for the re-opening of the historic Hialeah Park and sponsoring a resolution that named May as “A Safe Haven for Newborns Month.” As Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners for the 2017-2018 term, he established the Chairman’s Policy Council to address key issues facing our community such as mass transit expansion, courthouse and jail infrastructure, sea-level rise, housing affordability, and gun violence.

As county commissioner and mayoral candidate, he continues his commitment to improving the quality of life in Miami-Dade County, where he has called home for 47 years, received his bachelor’s degree in political science from Florida International University, and raised five children along with his wife, Viviana.
