Broward County is gearing up for a climate-centric gathering with an artistic twist, as the Resilient Environment Department and Cultural Division, back by the Community Foundation of Broward, have joined forces with the Xavier Cortada Foundation to host the Underwater: Broward campaign, an initiative that marries art and activism to fuel conversations and action around climate change, according to an announcement from county officials.

This eco-conscious initiative kicked off with Underwater Workshops and corresponding art installations at ten local schools, now the conversation broadens with a Central County Community Climate Conversation scheduled for Saturday, April 27 from 1-3PM at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center, flaunting free entry, hands-on climate art activities and interaction with climate change experts including eco-artist Xavier Cortada who is famed for his environmental work, as per details shared on the Broward County website.

During this event, attendees are invited to roll up their sleeves to participate in an interactive climate art exercise where they’ll find out the elevation of their homes in relation to sea level rise and then craft yard signs that make a statement on the urgency to tackle the climate crisis, this event looks to stoke discussions on health, personal economy, and the broader community’s stake in the issue of climate change.

In addition to brainy chats and art-making, guests can meander through a community connection fair, complete with exhibits from environmental programs and advocacy groups all aimed at enriching the public’s understanding of climate issues and spotlighting ways to get hands-on with community programs and volunteering. This fair offers a one-stop opportunity to get informed, get involved, and perhaps get inspired to make a difference. Free tickets can be snagged on Eventbrite, and you’ll find more details at the Broward County website.
