RECURRING DAILY

Discover how art can be a powerful tool in raising awareness about the urgency of sea level rise by engaging in the interactive art campaign The Underwater, a socially collaborative art project by Miami-Dade County inaugural artist in residence Xavier Cortada. Slated to take place from December 4 – 10, 2023, this creative response to sea level rise features the installation of thousands of elevation-specific yard signs in Miami Beach, Downtown, Wynwood and the Design District. The signs, strategically placed in high-traffic Miami Art Week corridors, will display each area’s elevation above sea level and inspire curious passersby to scan the embedded QR codes, offering an opportunity to process and internalize the area’s impending climate crisis.

Art Week attendees are welcome to participate in the campaign by picking up or creating their own elevation yard signs at select locations. By becoming aware of their home’s elevation, participants will experience a connection to the issue of climate change and ultimately become empowered to be part of the solution.

The campaign launches with Underwater Conversations, a panel event at Miami Beach Regional Library on December 4 at 5:00 p.m. featuring the artist Xavier Cortada plus guests Brian Haus, Professor & Associate Dean for Infrastructure, University of Miami RSMAES; Christine Kuan, President & Executive Director, Creative Capital; and Adam Roberti, Executive Director, Cortada Foundation. During the panel, attendees will have the opportunity to create their own yard signs and participate in discussions about creative approaches to climate action.

The Underwater is co-presented by Creative Capital, Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, Cecil & Ana Milton Family Foundation and Arts & Business Council of Miami.
