WHAT: “Building a World Safe for the Dreams of Children,” commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Juvenile Court of America.
WHY: To commemorate this centennial, Miami-Dade County’s 11th Judicial Court is hosting a week-long series of activities at the Juvenile Justice Center. The events will culminate in the unveiling of a striking mural by artist Xavier Cortada, who has interpreted this mosaic through the drawings and poems of 500 kids in the system. The mosaic will be permanently displayed on the facade of the building.
WHO: Administrative Judge Cindy Lederman, Administrative Judge Lester Langer and 100th Anniversary Chairperson/Judge Scott M. Bernstein are organizing the event. Secretary of the Department of Juvenile Justice Bill Bankhead and Florida Supreme Court Justice Fred Lewis will attend the unveiling of the mural. All activities are open to the public.
WHEN: Activities will be held daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. December 6 – 10.
The unveiling of the mural will be Friday, Dec. 10 at 12:15 p.m. From Dec. 6 – 9 (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.), Cortada, with youth from Regis House, will be present in the atrium area of the court painting a separate mural to be permanently displayed in the waiting area of the court.
