INTERACTIVE ART CAMPAIGN BRINGS CLIMATE SOLUTIONS TO MIAMI ART WEEK 2023
Miami-Dade County artist-in-residence Xavier Cortada calls on Miami to co-create ‘The Underwater‘ during Miami Art Week 2023. This community-wide initiative grabs attention and piques curiosity through site-specific yard signs that creatively reveal Miami’s vulnerability to rising seas, spark climate conversations, and catalyze civic engagement. The Knight Foundation awarded a $100,000 grant to the Xavier Cortada Foundation to present this large-scale participatory art project in collaboration with co-sponsors.

ANIMATING DEMOCRACY: ART HONORS MIAMI-DADE VOTERS
Incorporating their names into a public art piece, artist Xavier Cortada pays tribute to Miami-Dade voters. The digital tapestry features all 380,000 distinct last names comprising the registered voters of Miami-Dade County.
This interpretative American flag, on permanent display at the entrance of the Miami-Dade Elections Department, stands as a powerful symbol of our democracy’s resilience, where each name, each voice, and each vote holds significance. It encourages us to continue celebrating our diversity’s strength and safeguarding the rich tapestry of democracy that each of us contributes to with every vote we cast.
CORTADA RECEIVES "2023 CREATOR AWARD" AT 'THE ELLIES'
On October 25, 2023, Xavier Cortada was honored with #TheEllies Creator Award to expand upon his “Underwater Florida” project. In 2024, he will revisit some of the coastal communities he originally mapped in 2022, inspiring them to actively engage in finding creative solutions to a future with rising seas.
Cortada initially revealed Florida’s climate vulnerability by painting elevation signs at 54 coastal city halls, highlighting the threat of sea level rise. His grant, part of the $500K in Ellies awards by Oolite Arts, empowers communities to actively find solutions.
