CORTADA UNVEILS #KeepFossilsUnderground ELECTRIC BUS FOR EARTH DAY 2023

The artwork of Miami-Dade County’s Artist-in-Residence Xavier Cortada, featuring extinct animals and the hashtag #KeepFossilsUnderground, now adorns one of the county’s newest electric buses. The work aims to educate the community around the impact of fossil fuels on our changing climate while highlighting the importance of transitioning to clean energy and using public transportation as a way to help protect the environment.

You are invited to a special reception hosted by Xavier Cortada and MISSION at the Coral Gables Museum this Thursday, May 25th from 6:30 to 9:00pm. 

During the event, Cortada will unveil three new paintings he created in partnership with MISSION to celebrate the launch of the #KeepCoolMiamiDade extreme heat awareness campaign presented by the Xavier Cortada Foundation. Jane Gilbert, Miami-Dade County’s Chief Heat Officer, Chris Valletta of MISSION, and Adam Roberti of the Cortada Foundation will join the artist in making remarks.

CORTADA DELIVERS KEYNOTE ADDRESS AT FLORIDA PUBLIC ART CONFERENCE

On May 11, 2023, Xavier Cortada gave the closing keynote speech at the Florida Association of Public Art Professionals‘ 25th Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida.

During his speech, “The Urgency of Social Practice in Public Art,” Cortada challenged attendees to utilize their positions as leaders in the public art sphere to mobilize communities in addressing the climate crisis.
