APRIL 2023 – CORTADA CREATES “GROUNDED” PUBLIC ARTWORK IN LIBERTY CITY

Celebrate Earth Day with "A Journey Through Time" on Sat, April 22nd at 4pm at Bill Cosford Cinema

CORTADA CREATES "GROUNDED" PUBLIC ART INSTALLATION IN LIBERTY CITY

Xavier Cortada’s “Grounded” is a public art installation that adorns the 54 entrances of the Liberty Square apartment buildings spanning a three-block area in Miami’s Liberty City. At a time when gentrification is accelerating, the intricate metal roots featured in Cortada’s artwork serve as symbolic markers, representing the deep connection and sense of belonging that neighbors have with their community.

“Grounded” anchors residents to the rich history of the place, encapsulating both the positive contributions of past leaders who nurtured and built the community, as well as the darker aspects of its past, such as racism, violence, and exploitation. Three of Cortada’s art pieces face what remains of the segregation wall that African Americans were once forced to stay behind after sunset.

CELEBRATE EARTH DAY WITH "A JOURNEY THROUGH ART AND TIME" AT COSFORD CINEMA

Join Miami-Dade County’s pioneer eco-artist and inaugural artist-in-residence Xavier Cortada this Saturday, April 22nd at 4:00pm for “A Journey Through Space and Time” at UM’s Cosford Cinema. Cortada will invite guests in attendance to participate in a countywide climate action campaign, be part of a ritualistic performance aimed at building empathy and connection, see a preview exhibition of original paintings, and write a letter to someone in 2123 that will be sealed and archived for 100 years.

CORTADA SCIENCE ACADEMY STUDENTS LEARN AND PLAY IN NATURE

The Cortada Science Art Academy is underway and has been a tremendous success so far. Our students have been engaged and excited to learn about the intersection of art and science through interactive projects, activities, and expeditions around Pinecrest Gardens. These kids are not only developing a deeper appreciation for our natural world, but they’re growing into young leaders who will help protect it.

PLANT YOUR FLAG: REGROW OUR NATIVE TREE CANOPY ONE YARD AT A TIME

This Earth Day, do more than plant a tree… plant ideas of reforestation and conservation in the minds of your friends, family, and neighbors! By putting a replica of the flag that Xavier Cortada planted at the North Pole alongside your own native tree, you’ll spark conversations about growing our native tree canopy while helping local resilience efforts such as cooling our streets with more shade.
