August 2022 – Mayor names Cortada inaugural Artist-in-Residence for Miami-Dade County

Artist delivers keynote address at Future of Water Conference

LEVINE CAVA APPOINTS CORTADA AS COUNTY'S
FIRST ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava appointed Xavier Cortada as the County’s inaugural Artist-in-Residence. In this role, Cortada aims to use the power of art to engage residents and public servants as creative problem-solvers who work together to address important environmental and social concerns and build a more just, loving and beautiful future.

“Xavier’s work focuses on some of Miami-Dade’s most complex challenges, including climate change, sea level rise, and civic engagement. As our artist-in-residence, he will add a new perspective to the work we do in the county and beyond, to create more accessible and widespread arts and culture programming in the region.”

CORTADA FOCUSES ON FUTURE OF WATER IN

CONFERENCE’S KEYNOTE AND ART EXHIBITION

With the goal of developing a unified vision for collaborative water governance, the 2022 Future of Water Summit recently convened over 300 attendees at the Ritz Carlton South Beach and invited Xavier Cortada to serve the conference’s Artist-in-Residence.

Cortada’s keynote speech addressed the role that art can have in solving critical water challenges.  From polar glaciers to Arctic sea ice, from streaming brooks to open bays, Cortada frequently uses water as a medium to convey its incredible importance, warn about the grave danger it poses to coastal communities, and engage others in its conservation.

The artist also branded the conference with his art, engaged conference attendees with his “HELLO” participatory art project (originally launched at COP26), and exhibited his “Florida is… Diatoms” series of limited edition prints (an edition of which is in the collection of Florida’s Department of State).
