CORTADA LAUNCHES THE UNDERWATER
IN LITTLE HAVANA

Cortada developed The Underwater to help his neighbors understand their vulnerability to rising seas and give them the tools to take action. Forty years after graduating, he’s returning to Miami Senior High School to implement his socially engaged art project across Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.

Working with Miami High’s science department, over the course of a few weeks, his team will deliver more than eighty 90-minute-long, interactive presentations to over 2,500 Miami High students. Importantly, students are encouraged to create
Underwater Markers, elevation-marked signs, and place them in their front yards as a way of sparking climate-related conversation and action.

On April 27th at 6pm, Little Havana residents are invited to The Underwater’s
Climate Town Hall and Community Connection Fair. There, Cortada will be joined by his colleagues from the University of Miami for a panel discussion and Q&A. Students and their families will also have the ability to get involved in ongoing efforts with local environmental groups.

CORTADA NAMED TO 2022 GRIST 50 LIST

Each year, the Grist 50 identifies emerging leaders in climate, equity, and sustainability. These brilliant souls are politicians, artists, butchers, and scientists.

The 50 visionaries on this year’s list, including Xavier Cortada, are regular people who also happen to be sustainability stars. They hail from all walks of life and every part of the country. Simply put, these are ordinary people who are achieving extraordinary things. Grist calls them Fixers, because they’re not afraid to face problems head-on and work toward just solutions.

Cortada’s iLaw Keynote address at the JW Marriott Marquis Miami enlightened international lawyers on the most pressing issue facing us all, giving real context to a new legal landscape requiring Sustainable Development.
