80.15 W
For the opening, Cortada
will exhibit “80.15 W.” Titled
for Biscayne Bay’s longitude, “80.15 W”
features the seventeen threatened and endangered animal species that
call Biscayne National Park home.
Cortada created the drawings on carbon paper, a metaphor for the impact
(or “carbon footprint”) humans have had on the environment, even inside
the boundaries of protected nature preserves.

paper, 11″ x 8.5″, 2010.

Invited guests
Susan
Gonshor, Chief Park Interpreter, Biscayne National Park.
Within sight of downtown
Miami, yet worlds away, the park protects a
rare combination of aquamarine waters, emerald islands, and
fish-bejeweled coral reefs. Here too is evidence of 10,000 years of
human history, from pirates and shipwrecks to pineapple farmers and
presidents. Ms. Gonshor will
briefly discuss how the 17 endangered species Cortada featured in his “80.15
W” exhibit find sanctuary in a place protected from development.
Don Finefrock, Executive Director, South
Florida
National Parks Trust.
The Trust was founded in 2002
to improve
the quality of life in South Florida by supporting the national parks
that define our landscape and enrich our culture…
Proceeds from works sold
during the reception will benefit the
South Florida
National Parks Trust.
