The U.S. Supreme Court ruled to make it significantly more difficult for us to address the climate crisis on a federal level. So now what?

We need to organize. We need to raise our voices. Here in Miami, we need to do everything in our power to ensure we stay above sea level.

In a recent @miamiherald article, @xcortada talked about how it’s not just Miami Beach that’s vulnerable: “I want the folks in Doral, Hialeah, Sweetwater, Medley, West Kendall, Florida City— all these communities that hug the Everglades — to understand what their climate risk is.”

Last month, we engaged Miami High students in raising awareness about sea level rise in Little Havana.

Through our project, “The Underwater,” the goal was to bring elevation-marked yard signs to the storefronts of Calle Ocho.

Students helped merchants discover their store’s elevation above sea level and create an “Underwater Marker.”

These Markers aim to spark climate conversations, featuring a QR code so customers could learn more.

By the afternoon, dozens of businesses along Calle Ocho had proudly displayed their Underwater Marker.

What happens when you use art to mobilize a high school around climate action? Take a look!

Yesterday, dozens of Miami High students went up and down Calle Ocho to talk to their neighbors about our shared vulnerability to sea level rise and engage them in a city-wide participatory art project aimed at generating awareness and action, The Underwater.

Last week’s Little Havana Climate Town Hall & Community Connection Fair was an inspiring example of how friends, families, neighbors, and organizations can come together to learn from one another and find ways of taking collective action against the climate crisis.

Thousands of Underwater Markers have been distributed to @mhs_stings families and now we’re two days away from our big event!

The Little Havana Climate Town Hall & Community Connection Fair is this Wednesday at Miami High from 6-8pm and it’s open to the community.

The event will include a panel discussion and Q&A with artist @xcortada, Katharine Mach, climate change scientist at UM’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, and Jessica Owley, environmental lawyer at UM’s School of Law.

Following the town hall, residents are invited to join Cortada and various local organizations for a Community Connection Fair aimed at linking students, families, and neighbors with ongoing initiatives in Miami. At the fair, you’ll have the ability to learn about and get involved in efforts ranging from climate advocacy and adaptation to sustainable seafood and native tree planting.

We feel like the best way to celebrate the Earth today is by working with others to help protect it.

This afternoon we engaged dozens of University of Miami students in our “Plan(T)” project, having each of them create an elevation-marked flag and take home a red mangrove to grow. Swipe to the end to see @um_sebastian’s contribution 🙌🏼

Today was the final day of Underwater Stories at Miami High! We’ve visited over 80 different classes over the last month and had more than 2000 students create their own elevation-marked yard signs to catalyze climate conversations in Miami.

Last night was special - The Humanities Edge presented a tribute to artist-activist Xavier Cortada, “Flying Solo with Artist X.”

After an engaging discussion about ethics and art, FIU and MDC faculty and students honored Cortada with a performance about his life and work.

Yesterday dozens of people joined us at the University of Miami for an Earth Month mangrove planting ceremony.

After hearing from artist @xcortada, Executive Director @adamroberti, and Foundation interns, everyone created flags with their homes’ elevations, selected the mangroves they wanted to plant along the canal by the @miamiherbert Business School, and walked in procession while chanting “I am a mangrove forest.”

By midday, hundreds of small red mangroves had been planted at the water’s edge and will grow together to form a resilient forest… one that sequesters carbon dioxide, provides habitat for countless species, and protects the shoreline from erosion.

Yesterday was indeed a day of hope.

The students at Miami High have been hard at work!

The students at Miami High have been hard at work! Dozens of classes have already participated in “The Underwater” by learning about Miami’s vulnerability to the climate crisis, putting their homes’ elevations on Underwater Markers, and bringing them home to install in their front yards.

If you’re passing through Little Havana, keep an eye out for what could become Miami’s biggest art project of all time 👀

Week 2 in Miami High started today!

Between 7:20am and 2:20pm, 10 different science classes participated in The Underwater. With about 20 students per class, that amounts to around 200 students who learned about the climate crisis and are taking action to spark conversations in their neighborhoods.

This weekend Xavier Cortada gave a keynote speech

This weekend Xavier Cortada gave a keynote speech at iLaw2022, the Florida Bar’s International Law conference.

Before he took the stage, Cortada had conference attendees participate in his HELLO participatory art project. Each one of them found out their home’s elevation above sea level and wore it on their chest, sparking a buzz throughout the conference halls about Miami’s vulnerability to rising seas and the need for mitigating the climate crisis.

Advanced Achievers Academy is an incredible school

Advanced Achievers Academy is an incredible school down in Florida City and we couldn’t have been more excited to bring them the Plan(T) participatory eco-art project.

Students ranging from middle school to high school were not only extremely curious about sea level rise and saltwater intrusion, but they wanted to know how they could take action and make an impact.

Special thanks to @teachingwithpurpose for organizing the event and inspiring all of her students to strive for greatness.
