On the occasion of his 60th birthday, internationally renowned eco-artist Xavier Cortada was honored with Xavier Cortada Day in Miami-Dade County, declared by Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. The celebration was marked by a special dedication of the Underwater 13 ceramic mural at the entrance of Cortada’s alma mater, Miami Senior High School. This significant public artwork was created to inspire students to engage with creative solutions for the climate challenges facing our community and our planet.
In addition to the mural dedication, Cortada announced the launch of a new annual scholarship program. Each year, one art student and one science student from Miami Senior High will receive a scholarship, underscoring the critical importance of fostering interdisciplinary approaches to solving climate issues. This initiative aims to support the next generation of creative problem-solvers in Miami, ensuring that future leaders are equipped to tackle the environmental challenges ahead.
The day was made even more memorable through the support of Miami-Dade County’s Department of Cultural Affairs Director Marialaura Leslie, Miami Senior High School Principal Benny Valdes, and Xavier Cortada Foundation Executive Director Adam Roberti, who joined the artist in celebrating this milestone. Cortada expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to give back to his community in such a meaningful way, noting that there was no better way to celebrate his birthday than by investing in Miami’s future.
