Day one of the workshop on the Roadmaps, Codes, and Standards Towards Decarbonization of the Concrete and Cement Industry in Latin America (LATAM) concluded with an inspiring and thought-provoking Keynote Address by Xavier Cortada, as well as a hands-on, socially engaging art activity titled ‘The Underwater.’ These highlighted how concrete is indeed part of the solution for the path towards decarbonization, climate adaptation, and resiliency.
By engaging participants in this socially engaging art project, the workshop aimed to foster a deeper connection between the participants and the pressing environmental issues, encouraging them to think critically about the role of the industry and individual actions in contributing to a more sustainable future.
This approach of combining technical discussions with artistic engagement creates a more holistic understanding of the challenges and solutions surrounding decarbonization and climate resilience. It highlights the importance of interdisciplinary strategies that include not only technological and regulatory changes but also cultural and societal shifts towards sustainability. The inclusion of art in such discussions can play a crucial role in making complex scientific and technical issues more accessible and relatable to a broader audience, thereby enhancing public engagement and support for necessary changes.
