On April 27th, 2024, Broward County Resilient Environment Department, Cultural Division, the Community Foundation of Broward, and the Cortada Foundation hosted the inaugural Central County Climate Conversation at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center in Fort Lauderdale, FL. This interactive workshop was led by renowned eco-artist Xavier Cortada, offering participants a hands-on opportunity to engage in meaningful climate action.
The event began with a warm welcome and an introduction to the day’s activities. Participants were excited to create their personalized elevation markers under the guidance of Xavier Cortada. These markers, which display the elevation above sea level of each participant’s home, are a central element of Cortada’s “The Underwater” initiative, designed to raise awareness about sea level rise and climate vulnerabilities.
Throughout the workshop, attendees learned about the specific climate challenges facing their local community, including rising sea levels, increased storm intensity, and other impacts of climate change. Local experts and community leaders also shared insights into ongoing resilience initiatives and strategies for mitigating these challenges.
The interactive nature of the workshop encouraged participants to actively contribute to the climate conversation, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. By creating their elevation markers and discussing local climate issues, attendees became climate ambassadors, empowered to advocate for sustainable practices and policies within their neighborhoods.
Participants left with a deeper understanding of their local climate vulnerabilities and a renewed commitment to taking action to protect their community. The event was a resounding success, setting the stage for future events aimed at fostering environmental awareness and action across Broward County.
