ECO-ART RETURNS TO ST. THOMAS EPISCOPAL SCHOOL

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2023

St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School
5692 N Kendall Dr, Coral Gables, FL 33156

On November 8th, Cortada reinstated his Reclamation Project at St. Thomas Episcopal School, involving every student from grades 1st to 5th (as he had first done in 2008). As part of this initiative, each student received a mangrove propagule, emphasizing the environmental importance of mangroves.

Mangroves are vital ecosystems that provide numerous benefits to the environment. They act as natural barriers, protecting coastal areas from erosion and storm surges. Additionally, mangroves serve as nurseries for various marine species, supporting biodiversity. Their intricate root systems trap sediment and filter pollutants, improving water quality.

The art installation on the school’s exterior wall served a dual purpose. Beyond its aesthetic value, it functioned as a vertical nursery for the mangroves. This innovative approach allowed students to actively participate in the care and growth of these plants. As the mangroves flourished, the installation symbolized not only the students’ artistic contributions but also their commitment to environmental stewardship and the vitality of coastal ecosystems. Through this hands-on experience, Cortada effectively merged art and ecological education, fostering a sense of responsibility for the natural world among the young participants.
