OUR CHANGING LANDSCAPE... | AMERICAN SOCIETY OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS FLORIDA 2023 CONFERENCE + EXPO

SATURDAY, JULY 29, 2023 | 11:30 a.m.

JW MARRIOTT MIAMI TURNBERRY

In the closing Keynote speech of their annual conference, Cortada addressed Florida landscape architects as the professionals who are uniquely positioned to oversee our changing landscape as it is transformed by rising seas, extreme heat, saltwater intrusion, invasive pests, and other human-caused climate impacts.

He discussed creative approaches that can help landscape architects meet this challenge so they do more than prepare spaces for the changes to come, but also convert them into places that invite visitors to be part of solutions.

Cortada showcased his public art projects that draw connections between people and the environment by piquing curiosity, spurring conversation, and catalyzing further exploration. Specifically, he featured 5 ways in which landscape architects can work with artists to activate public spaces as platforms for environmental awareness and engagement:

  • Using socially engaged art at county parks to prepare residents for a future with rising seas (The Underwater)
  • Inspiring environmental activism through interactive sculptures (Flower Force)
  • Inspiring eco-actions at Botanical Gardens (Florida Botanical Gardens, Pinecrest Gardens, McKee Garden)
  • Using public art to connect public housing residents with nature (Wading birds, Diatom Fountain, Grounded)
  • Placemaking through public art in hospitals, parks and parking lots (Baptist Hospital, Curtis Park, Deerfield Beach)
