SUMMARY:White Mountains art residency paintings on display at "Take Me Home"
DESCRIPTION:Two paintings created by Cortada during his 2012 summer residency in New Hampshire’s White Mountains are on display in the Take Me Home show at the Bakehouse Art Complex\, Miami\, FL. BAC resident and associate artists create pieces measuring 12” x 12” and priced under $1\,000. This exhibition provides patrons with affordable artwork to purchase. (On view in the Swenson Gallery November 30th\, 2012 – January 18\, 2013) \n\nWhite Mountains Residency Works on display at “Take Me Home” \n\n\nCortada created these two paintings during Summer 2012 in Center Sandwich\, NH during his White Mountain National Forest/Northern New Hampshire Art Association artists residency.  . The paintings focus on two sensitive species living in the White Mountain National Forest at the top of Mt. Washington. They allow us to see nature through the prism of space (habitat: global migration and habitat change) and time (evolution: glacial relics\, evolving subspecies):\n\nSpace: Bicknell’s Thrush (Catharus bicknelli)\nTime: White Mountain Fritillary (Boloria titania montinus)\n\n \nXavier Cortada\, “Bicknell’s Thrush (Catharus bicknelli)”\, 12′ x 12′\, acrylic on canvas\, 2012 (White Mountain National Forest/Art Alliance of Northern New Hampshire Artist Residency)\nCortada created this painting during Summer 2012 in Center Sandwich\, NH during his White Mountain National Forest/Northern New Hampshire Art Association artists residency. The Bicknell’s Thrush (Catharus bicknelli) only summer habitat is below the alpine area in White Mountain National Forest\, a habitat shrinking as global climate change allows hardwoods to encroach from below and high winds at the alpine elevations restrict the upper boundaries of their dense Balsam Fir habitat.  This bird species migrates to habitats beyond the forest boundaries\, wintering on the island of Hispaniola\, where its habitat is being deforested. Researchers are focused on the effects of acid rain and the deposition of mercury at the top of WMNF mountains as possible causes for dwindling species populations. \n \n\nXavier Cortada\, “White Mountain Fritillary (Boloria titania montinus)”\, 12′ x 12′\, acrylic on canvas\, 2012 (White Mountain National Forest/Art Alliance of Northern New Hampshire Artist Residency)\n\nThe  White Mountain Fritillary (Boloria titania montinus) is a glacial relic. This butterfly evolved as subspecies at the mountain’s alpine elevations after the glaciers receded. Scientist’s have yet to discover the plant the Arctic Butterfly uses to lay its eggs\, so it is difficult to gauge potential global climate change threats. This is one of the paintings which focus on sensitive species living in the White Mountain National Forest at the top of Mt. Washington. \nTake Me Home\nBAC resident and associate artists create pieces measuring 12” x 12” and priced under $1\,000. \nThis exhibition provides patrons with affordable artwork to purchase on view in the Swenson Gallery November 30th\, 2012 – January 18\, 2013.
