Flood No More: A Climate Art Pop-Up at the Van Alen Institute

December 14, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Cortada Projects invites you to the Van Alen Institute’s Keeping Current Festival: Climate Action by Design on Saturday, Dec. 14 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. to experience Flood No More: A Climate Art Pop-Up, where our projects Underwater HOA and Plan(T) will be featured.

Underwater HOA depicts South Florida’s vulnerability to rising sea levels and saltwater intrusion by encouraging residents to make and install a yard sign (similar to the ones realtors use to sell houses or politicians use to campaign) on their front lawn to depict how many feet of melting glacial water must rise before their property is underwater. Each is numbered with the figure in feet that refers to the current land elevation of their home. At José Martí Park, Cortada will also install the signs in different locations throughout the park, using the park as a microcosm of Miami marking the signs with landmarks and their corresponding elevation levels.

Plan(T) is Cortada’s latest eco-art project that urges every Miami-Dade County resident to plant a saltwater-tolerant mangrove propagule and an elevation-marked flag in their yard to symbolize and start preparing for the future of sea level rise.

Please come out and witness Xavier Cortada’s and the other 11 South Florida-based artists’ work that tackle climate change in this wonderful event!
