SUMMARY:Cortada Projects at UNTITLED\, ART Fair's "Futurescape Miami: Skyline to Shoreline"
DESCRIPTION:Xavier Cortada convened the “North Pole Dinner Party\,” as one of several performances the Facebook Art Department commissioned him to create as part of Futurescape Miami: Skyline to Shoreline. Scroll down to learn more about Cortada’s participation in this event. Click here to learn more about the North Pole Dinner Party. \n  \nCortada Projects invites you to Futurescape Miami: Skyline to Shoreline\, a public presentation by the Facebook Art Department and Facebook Analog Research Lab\, as part of UNTITLED\, ART Fair’s Monuments Program during Art Basel Miami 2019 from Wednesday\, Dec. 4 to Sunday\, Dec. 8. \n  \n  \n  \nABOUT FUTURESCAPE \nThe artists whose work is featured in the Facebook Art Department’s exhibition Futurescape Miami: Skyline to Shoreline invite visitors to consider the idea of ‘futurescape’ as one that encompasses an increasing consideration of the impact of sea level rise and shifting shorelines on urban environments. Finnish artists Pekka Niittyvirta and Timo Aho have installed lines of light on and around FB Art Dept’s South Beach activation space as a visual warning of the long-term effects of climate change on the landscape. San Francisco-based artists Hughen/Starkweather have created research-based abstract artworks that reference past and future climate-related events\, and the respective practices of Miami-based artists Thom Wheeler Castillo\, Xavier Cortada\, and Misael Soto address the global climate crisis through participatory activations\, installations\, and performances. Other projects featured are by Louisiana-based artist and scientist Brandon Ballengée\, past Facebook artist in residence Jay Nelson\, and Facebook designers in residence Cody Blocker and Sean Suchara. \n**Public programming will run December 4–8 and is free and open to all on a first-come basis.** \nSCHEDULE \n\n\n\n\n\nWEDNESDAY\, DECEMBER 4 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11am – 5pm: Plan(T) + Letters to the Future\n12pm – 2pm: Remedying Gestures\n3pm – 4pm: Reflecting Pools (Activation)\n4pm – 5pm: Flood Walk: Miami* \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTHURSDAY\, DECEMBER 5 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11am – 5pm: Plan(T) + Letters to the Future\n3pm – 4pm: Reflecting Pools (Activation)\n4pm – 5pm: Underwater HOA\n4pm – 5pm: Flood Walk: Miami* \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFRIDAY\, DECEMBER 6 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11am – 5pm: Plan(T) + Letters to the Future\n11am – 12pm: DO NOT OPEN\n3pm – 4pm: Reflecting Pools (Activation)\n4pm – 5pm: Screen printing\n4pm – 5pm: Flood Walk: Miami* \n\n\n\n\n\nSATURDAY\, DECEMBER 7 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11am – 5pm: Plan(T) + Letters to the Future\n11am – 12pm: Flood Walk: Miami*\n11am – 12pm: DO NOT OPEN\n3pm – 4pm: Reflecting Pools (Activation)\n4pm – 5pm: Screen printing \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSUNDAY\, DECEMBER 8 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11am – 5pm: Plan(T) + Letters to the Future\n11am – 12pm: Flood Walk: Miami*\n11am – 12pm: DO NOT OPEN\n3pm – 4pm: Screen printing\n4pm – 5pm: Reflecting Pools (Activation) \n  \nPRESENTATIONS \nXavier Cortada | Plan(T)\n \nSea levels are rising. Saltwater intrusion into our drinking water\, septic tanks\, landscape and agriculture is inevitable. By planting for a future with saltwater-intrusion\, local residents can reckon with and begin planning for the effects of climate change on Miami. Residents of Miami-Dade County are welcome to take a mangrove propagule to plant in their neighborhood. \nXavier Cortada | Letters to the Future \nWrite an open letter to someone living in the future\, display it for the public to read and contemplate. Although the letters are written for people not yet born\, their true audience consists of those breathing in the present. \nXavier Cortada | Underwater HOA \nCortada asks coastal homeowners to paint the sea level of their property on repurposed “for sale” and political signs\, and then plant the signs in their front yards. By mapping the impending crisis due to sea level rise\, the artist aims to make the invisible visible. \nXavier Cortada | DO NOT OPEN \nIn this ritualistic exercise\, the artist leads participants in writing a letter that will be sealed\, archived and left unread until 2119 in an archive at the University of Miami. \nFor more information on the presentations\, click the links attached to their names. For more information on the different artists’ presentations and Futurescape Miami click here.  \n\n\n  \n\n\nABOUT THE FACEBOOK ART DEPARTMENT \nThe Facebook Art Department includes the Artist in Residence (FB AIR)\, Analog Research Lab (ARL)\, and Creative Engagement programs\, which have a collective mission to encourage creativity\, innovation\, openness\, and connectivity through art and design. FB AIR invites artists to create site-specific art installations around the world at Facebook offices\, and ARLs act as on-site print studios that host immersive learning experiences through the Creative Engagement program. The Facebook Art Department also presents public-facing programs and supports projects that bring together diverse communities in real life and encourage the exploration of creative and critical thinking. To date\, we have created projects with over 600 artists and designers in dozens of locations around the world.
