Cortada Projects invites you to Futurescape Miami: Skyline to Shoreline, a public presentation by the Facebook Art Department and Facebook Analog Research Lab, as part of UNTITLED, ART Fair’s Monuments Program during Art Basel Miami 2019 from Wednesday, Dec. 4 to Sunday, Dec. 8.
ABOUT FUTURESCAPE
The artists whose work is featured in the Facebook Art Department’s exhibition Futurescape Miami: Skyline to Shoreline invite visitors to consider the idea of ‘futurescape’ as one that encompasses an increasing consideration of the impact of sea level rise and shifting shorelines on urban environments. Finnish artists Pekka Niittyvirta and Timo Aho have installed lines of light on and around FB Art Dept’s South Beach activation space as a visual warning of the long-term effects of climate change on the landscape. San Francisco-based artists Hughen/Starkweather have created research-based abstract artworks that reference past and future climate-related events, and the respective practices of Miami-based artists Thom Wheeler Castillo, Xavier Cortada, and Misael Soto address the global climate crisis through participatory activations, installations, and performances. Other projects featured are by Louisiana-based artist and scientist Brandon Ballengée, past Facebook artist in residence Jay Nelson, and Facebook designers in residence Cody Blocker and Sean Suchara.
**Public programming will run December 4–8 and is free and open to all on a first-come basis.**

PRESENTATIONS
Xavier Cortada | Plan(T)
Sea levels are rising. Saltwater intrusion into our drinking water, septic tanks, landscape and agriculture is inevitable. By planting for a future with saltwater-intrusion, local residents can reckon with and begin planning for the effects of climate change on Miami. Residents of Miami-Dade County are welcome to take a mangrove propagule to plant in their neighborhood.
Xavier Cortada | Letters to the Future
Write an open letter to someone living in the future, display it for the public to read and contemplate. Although the letters are written for people not yet born, their true audience consists of those breathing in the present.
Xavier Cortada | Underwater HOA
Cortada asks coastal homeowners to paint the sea level of their property on repurposed “for sale” and political signs, and then plant the signs in their front yards. By mapping the impending crisis due to sea level rise, the artist aims to make the invisible visible.
Xavier Cortada | DO NOT OPEN
In this ritualistic exercise, the artist leads participants in writing a letter that will be sealed, archived and left unread until 2119 in an archive at the University of Miami.
