Arts in Democracy Research Exchange

Kettering research has found that one of the barriers to people having a stronger hand in shaping their collective future is the lack of civic organizations acting as vehicles for them to come together to address shared problems. In this research exchange, we will explore the role of the arts in democracy, and particularly how artists and arts organizations can encourage public deliberation on difficult issues facing communities or the country.

This exchange is one of several multinational exchanges that bring together students, scholars, journalists, community leaders, and civil society practitioners that use a range of strategies designed to improve civil society by encouraging citizen participation and advancing knowledge of democratic practices. These meetings, which are held every year, are designed to develop methodologies to establish and encourage ongoing relationships and exchanges of ideas among participants from around the world that often take place across many years.
