Art Basel 2014: Footsteps to Freedom exhibits Cortada’s homage to U.S. soldiers

Cortada, “Ground | Boots,” American soldier’s boot, acrylic, yellow orchid, 2014 (www.cortada.com)

Cortada, “Civic Duty” American soldier’s boot and voter’s sticker, 2014 (www.cortada.com)

Miami artist Xavier Cortada is honored to participate in Footsteps to Freedom, an art exhibit honoring American soldiers who fight for our freedom.

In “March Forth,” the Cortada places four sets of American soldier’s boots on the ground pointing out in four directions.  On the boots Cortada marks the four coordinates: North, East, West, South.  The work reminds us how our soldiers march to all corners of the Earth to protect our freedom.  The piece will be installed in a room surrounded by letters and poems written from afar by soldiers in combat missions.

In “Ground | Boot,” the artist paints an authentic combat boot in yellow–it is from an American soldier stationed in Afghanistan.  Inside the boot, he as an orchid bloom, the fruit of their sacrifice on the ground.  The work is a tribute to all the troops who have served to keep us free and safe.

In “Civic Duty,” Cortada places a “I voted” sticker on an authentic combat boot.  The work admonishes us to honor their sacrifice on the field by being fully engaged in our representative democracy.
