SUMMARY:"90N/90S: North Pole & South Pole Installations" at the Miami Science Museum
DESCRIPTION:6/1/2010 to 8/5/2011\n\n\nWhen:\n12/2/2010\n\n\nWhere:\nMiami Science Museum\n3280 South Miami Avenue\nMiami\, Florida  33129\nUnited States\n\n\nContact:\nSean Duran\, Vice President for Exhibits\nsduran@miamisci.org\n\n\n\n \n90N/90S: North Pole & South Pole Installations \nMiami based artist Xavier Cortada has created art installations at the Earth’s poles to generate awareness about global climate change: \nIn 2007\, the artist used the moving ice sheet beneath the South Pole as an instrument to mark time; the art piece will be completed in 150\,000 years. \nIn 2008\, he planted a green flag at North Pole to reclaim it for nature and launch a participatory eco-art project to help reforest the world below. \nReplicas and artifacts from these installations\, as well as other artworks\, will soon be on exhibition at the Miami Science Museum. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nThe South Pole Installations were sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Antarctic Artists and Writers Program.\n\n\n\nThe North Pole Installations were sponsored by the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Sponsored Artists program.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick here to read Science Magazine article: “At World’s End”\n\n\n\nFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE \n  \nEXHIBIT OPENING: XAVIER CORTADA CLIMATE CHANGE EXHIBIT LAUNCH DURING ART BASEL MIAMI BEACH AND ART MIAMI AT MIAMI SCIENCE MUSEUM \nMIAMI\, Fla. – October 7\, 2010 – Miami Science Museum invites you to Xavier Cortada’s solo exhibit\, “90N/90S: North Pole & South Pole Installations” at Miami Science Museum. \nCortada created art at the Earth’s poles to help address environmental issues at every point in between. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the New York Foundation for the Art’s sponsored artists program\, Cortada placed 24 shoes in a circle around the South and North Poles (in 2007 and 2008\, respectively)\, each shoe serving as a proxy for a person affected by global climate change across 24 time zones. \nAside from the shoes\, the exhibit features flags that were part of the original installations at opposite ends of the planet\, as well as works on paper made by melting Antarctic ice. This is the first time that works from both polar installations are featured as part of one exhibit. \nABOUT XAVIER CORTADA   \nXavier Cortada created installations at the Earth’s poles to generate awareness about global climate change. The Miami artist has also developed participatory art projects to engage communities in local action at points in between. In Florida\, he has worked with scientists\, arborists and environmental managers to develop eco-art projects that engage community residents in bioremediation\, including: coastal reforestation efforts in Miami and an urban reforestation campaign in St. Petersburg. He has also created eco-art interventions in Holland\, Latvia\, and Hawaii.\n \nABOUT MIAMI SCIENCE MUSEUM \nThe Miami Science Museum aims to make a difference in people’s lives by inspiring them to appreciate the impact that science and technology can have on every facet of our world. For over 60 years\, MiaSci’s award-winning educational programs\, family-focused exhibits\, historic planetarium\, and rehabilitative Wildlife Center and Clinic have enriched locals and tourists alike. In 2014\, the legacy continues\, as MiaSci will be moving to a new world-class\, state-of-the-art facility designed by Grimshaw Architects in the heart of downtown Miami.
