On November 21, 2024, Xavier Cortada presented his acclaimed project The Underwater at Princeton University during the Center for Migration and Development’s Colloquium Series. The presentation explored how art can galvanize communities into climate action, focusing on the issue of sea-level rise and Florida’s increasing vulnerability to rising seas.

Central to the presentation was The Underwater initiative, which uses yard signs depicting elevation above sea level to transform abstract environmental data into personal and visual narratives. By situating these signs in neighborhoods, the project underscores individual and collective stakes in addressing climate change. The discussion highlighted the power of participatory art to bridge the gap between personal experience and environmental advocacy, showcasing how creative expression can foster a sense of urgency and shared responsibility in combating the climate crisis.

This event was made possible through the efforts of the Center for Migration and Development and the Program in American Studies, whose support initiated a critical dialogue on art and environmental activism. Importantly, Cortada serves as a Research Fellow for Princeton University Center for Migration and Development.

Event Highlights:

  • Exploration of participatory art as a tool for climate advocacy
  • Discussion of Florida’s vulnerability to rising seas
  • Engagement with Princeton University’s community on fostering collective climate responsibility
