On June 14th and 15th, 2024, the Cultural Heritage Symposium was convened at Deering Estate, offering a comprehensive exploration and celebration of cultural heritage. The event, conducted both in-person and virtually, featured a diverse range of sessions and discussions.
The symposium brought together experts, practitioners, and enthusiasts to share insights, best practices, and innovative approaches in preserving and promoting cultural heritage. Topics discussed included the role of cultural heritage in contemporary society, the importance of preserving historical sites and traditions, and the integration of technology in heritage conservation. Participants explored case studies on successful heritage preservation projects, discussed challenges and solutions in managing cultural resources, and examined the impact of globalization on local cultures.
Sessions also delved into the intersection of art and cultural heritage, exploring how artistic expression can be a powerful tool for heritage advocacy. Workshops on digital archiving, community engagement, and policy development provided practical knowledge for attendees. Additionally, the symposium addressed the role of education in heritage preservation and strategies for fostering a greater appreciation of cultural heritage among younger generations.
Xavier Cortada closed the symposium by highlighting his county-wide initiative, “The Underwater: Miami-Dade Parks,” and discussing how it intersects with resource management, art, and advocacy for climate resilience. His presentation emphasized the importance of creative approaches in addressing climate challenges and the role of public art in raising awareness and inspiring action towards environmental stewardship.
