Greetings neighbors, this is the Miami Corona Project Daily Update for Friday, April 17th, 2020:

As of yesterday, there have been 8,326 positive cases of coronavirus across the county, with 772 hospitalizations and a total of 183 deaths–twenty eight more than yesterday.

Across the United States, the national total of positive cases is now 658,263, the total number of dead has risen to 32,186.

Let’s hope today brings better news.  I’ll update you tomorrow.

ON THIS DAY

Baptist Health South Florida joined just a handful of hospital labs around the country in receiving clearance from federal regulators to use a test it developed on its own for coronavirus. The test provides results in 24 hours or less, but due to it requiring highly qualified medical personnel, it will start off running between 40 to 80 tests per day.

Nonetheless, more and more hospitals are turning to in-house resources to provide rapid response in an attempt to reduce the severity of the virus amongst patients and the spread across our community. As Dr. Edwin W. Gould, a pathologist at Baptist Health said, “That’s the take-home message: we don’t want to wait. Patients don’t want to wait.”
