So you say Pembroke Pines is still a sleepy town with little culture? Think again. There’s so much going on this weekend that city officials could design an entire promotional campaign around the activities.
And to steal a phrase you might see on the video or flier, there’s something for everyone:
* Outdoor art festival featuring contemporary crafts, world-recognized artists and international food booths.
* Love & Jazz Valentine’s Concert at C.B. Smith Park headlined by saxophonist Boney James.
* Valentine’s weekend breakfast at Rickey’s to benefit the Police Athletic League.
* Opening of the aquatics park – including water slides and tube rides – at C.B. Smith Park.
The busy weekend starts Saturday with the second annual Rickey’s Valentine Breakfast from 8-11 a.m. at the SilverLakes restaurant, 220 NW 180th Ave.
Proceeds from the buffet will benefit the Police Athletic League. Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under.
The police department will put on demonstrations by its traffic unit, mounted patrol unit, K-9 unit, dive team and the bicycle unit in the parking lot.
After breakfast, art lovers can head to the Art in The Pines Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the grounds of City Hall, 10100 Pines Blvd. The free event is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
More than 100 artists and crafters will exhibit their works in an event being produced by Howard Alan Events, which promotes the Boca Fest and Weston and Las Olas art shows.
Displays will range from pottery to jewelry to ceramics. The festival will be divided into two sections: fine art and crafts, and contemporary crafts.
But there’s more than arts to the festival. Internationally known keyboardist and vocalist Kayte Wolf and Doug Walker, who plays the double tenor steel drums, will entertain the crowd. Vendors will also present a pavilion of international gourmet delights.
If the children are going to get bored with all the fancy art stuff, you can drop them off in the morning at C.B. Smith Park, where the freshwater beach, water slides and tube rides open for business at 9 a.m.
The water park, 900 N. Flamingo Rd., will open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays beginning this weekend. The facilities will open Monday through Fridays beginning April 1.
The admission fee is $6 for ages 13 and older and $4 for ages 12 and under for the water slides and tube ride. There’s a $2 charge for use of the beach and pool area.
After you pick up the children and take them home, you can wrap up the day with the Love & Jazz Valentine’s Concert on the Concert Green at C.B. Smith Park.
Bring beach chairs and blankets and get ready to cuddle up with your loved one and listen to Boney James and the opening act of Brian Culbertson, an instrumentalist and vocalist.
The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and the gates open at 6. Tickets are $12 if purchased in advance from Ticketmaster (523-3309), or $15 at the gate.
You can toast the night away with champagne and munch on gourmet foods and desserts.
