ON THIS DAY

With the start of hurricane season just a few weeks away, leaders are figuring out how to keep people safe from a life-threatening hurricane outside and a highly contagious disease inside. Miami-Dade County is planning for more shelters, more space and more COVID-19 testing at the door.

Getting people to evacuate is hard enough as it is, significantly more so for Miami-Dade residents who require a longer drive out of the state. In the Midwest, where tornado season is in full swing, governments have closed safe rooms and shelters to avoid the spread of the virus, leaving people with no where to go. Frank Rollason, director of emergency management in Miami-Dade County, said there’s no question that, if it comes to be, Miami will be facing a “double whammy” but they do not plan on turning people away at shelters.
