The Reclamation Project: South Beach
Miami artist Xavier Cortada worked with volunteers and environmental organizations to create a major collaborative eco-art project on Miami Beach. The artist dramatized the destruction of the island's native mangrove forest with an installation consisting of over 2,500 mangrove seedlings in clear cups which were displayed in the windows of South Beach business from November 2006 through January 2007. At the end of the project, the seedlings were be collected and used to reforest a portion of Biscayne Bay.  See:  www.reclamationproject.net.

Xavier Cortada's work has been shown across the Americas, Europe, Africa and Antarctica and locally in the Miami Art Museum, the Miami Museum of Science & Planetarium and the Bass Museum of Art. The Miami artist has been commissioned to create art for the White House, the Florida Supreme Court, Miami City Hall, the Museum of Florida History and the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. Cortada's work is also in the permanent collection of The World Bank.
