In Deep with Diatoms

The Tropical Botanic Artists

The Tropical Botanic Artists collective was established in Miami, Florida, in 2006 to highlight the beauty of tropical plants through art. Its members come from all walks of life and each brings a unique viewpoint to his or her work. They share a love of the natural world and that fascination is reflected in their art.  They hope that viewers will take a moment to observe and enjoy the wonders of Nature and bring that enjoyment into everyday life.

This special exhibit on Diatoms is brought to you by the Tropical Botanic Artists collective, in collaboration with the Department of Biological Sciences and Florida Coastal Everglades Long Term Ecological Research (FCE LTER) in the School of Environment, Arts and Society (SEAS) at Florida International University (FIU). The artists wish to express their gratitude to FIU, SEAS and FCE LTER for their support during the commission of this project.

Additional thanks go to Xavier Cortada, Artist-in-Residence at FIU, College of Architecture + The Arts (CARTA). He is known for his work with botanists in eco-art projects to reforesting mangroves, native trees and wildflowers. TBA are honored to welcome his 3-D diatom sculptures to the current exhibition.
