Join us on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. for the official launch of Cortada Projects and the opening of Plan(T) at the Hibiscus Gallery to get your own mangrove propagule and be part of the movement for a more resilient and prepared South Florida.

Xavier Cortada’s latest eco-art project in Pinecrest Gardens combines science, art and community by using the growth of mangrove propagules as its focal point.

Plan(T) uses the mangrove as a symbol to represent and tackle the issue of sea-level rise and saltwater intrusion in the South Florida community. With this project, Cortada is creating a future salt-tolerant tree canopy while also stimulating conversation about climate change and the imminent danger of not addressing it. Plan(T) recognizes the issue, creates a symbol for hope, and begins the conversation towards a better future for South Florida.

Plan(T) will also be featured in Art Basel 2019 and in 50 Miami-Dade Public Library System branches. The project asks homeowners to plant mangrove propagules, or seedlings, that can withstand the test of time and help serve as storm buffers. Planting salt tolerant mangroves in high ground will help to safeguard vulnerable areas of our city and provide future seed stock for areas surrendered to rising seas.

Everyone is welcome to come celebrate, learn, and participate in our county-wide participatory art project to combat sea level rise!
