Pinecrest Gardens Earth Week Celebration

April 19, 2020 - April 25, 2020

LONGITUDINAL INSTALLATION:
Pinecrest Gardens artist-in-residence Xavier Cortada created the Longitudinal Installation at the South Pole (2007) and North Pole (2008) to help address environmental issues at every point in between.

In the ritualistic art work, Cortada placed 24 shoes in a circle around each pole, each shoe serving as a proxy for a person affected by global climate change in the world. He placed the shoes inches apart along the lines of longitude crossing the place where these individuals live, conceptually diminishing the distance between them. After positioning the shoes, Cortada went to each shoe and recited a statement from a person living in that longitude about how climate change affected or will affect them.

PARTICIPATE
Cortada created a ceramic replica of the South Pole installation behind the Banyan Bowl at Pinecrest Gardens to engage visitors in the participatory art project.  The work was inaugurated during Art Basel 2017 by students from Palmer Trinity School, who performed the piece.  Since then, the work is performed in the gardens at the start of every season.

Because of this global pandemic, we can not come together in person to perform the work.  However, Cortada Projects at Pinecrest Gardens invites you to participate online.  Your posts will be added to our 25th Quote webpage.

Think about how your local environment has changed in your lifetime (make sure to tell us where you live).  Include this as your 25th quote.
