On March 22, 2020, as the Coronavirus pandemic gripped Miami, Xavier Cortada, recorded his “The Future is Here, Now” keynote plenary speech at Florida’s Pinecrest Gardens, site of his art studio and social practice.

As the vCIES 2020 Artist-in-Residence, Xavier Cortada delivered a keynote plenary speech to conference attendees, engaging them online in a ritualistic performance addressing climate change, and asked them to participate in creating his “Letters to the Future” mural.
The artist is also using his website as a platform to showcase the “Antarctic Ice Paintings” he created as part of his 2007 NSF Antarctic Artists and Writers Program residency. Importantly, throughout the conference, the artist will be sharing videos he is creating in Miami as a response to the Coronavirus pandemic.
